You certainly are very kind to Canadian authors, DGR -- and most perceptive. This is undoubtedly Ondaatje's most conventional novel, but one that does reward readers. While its context centres on the "building" of Toronto, that same story took place (usually much earlier) in every other major world story. Ondaatje does an excellent job of capturing just what that means to the people involved -- this is truly an excellent novel.
